Onyx stone guide: backlit feature walls for UAE interiors

Onyx is the one stone in our warehouse that clients react to physically — it is also the one most likely to be specified in the wrong place.

Onyx is quarried in bands of colour deposited by mineral-rich groundwater, which is what gives it a fluid, almost liquid pattern unlike any other natural stone. It is also softer, more porous and more fragile than marble or granite — a decorative material, not a working surface, and every specification decision follows from that one fact.

Why onyx glows: translucency explained

Onyx has a crystalline structure that allows light to pass through it — the thinner the slab and the paler the banding, the more dramatic the effect when lit from behind. This is the single property that makes onyx worth its price premium: no other natural stone we stock does this convincingly.

Translucency also means colour and pattern shift noticeably between reflected daylight and backlit conditions. A slab that looks subdued in a showroom under normal lighting can become a completely different, far more saturated feature once backlit — always ask to see a sample lit both ways before committing.

How backlit panels are actually built

Because raw onyx is fragile and often naturally fissured, backlit panels are resin-backed and laminated onto a fibreglass mesh before installation — this is standard practice, not a sign of inferior stone, and it is what makes a large-format backlit wall structurally viable at all. The panel then sits in front of an LED light box built into the wall or joinery, with even, diffused illumination rather than visible point sources.

Getting the light box right matters more than the stone selection: uneven LED spacing shows through as hot spots and dark bands once the panel is lit, undoing the whole effect. This is worth specifying carefully with your electrician or joiner before the wall is built, not after.

See it lit, not just laid flat

We keep a lit display panel at our Sharjah warehouse specifically because a flat, unlit onyx sample tells you almost nothing about how it will look once installed.

Where onyx belongs, and where it does not

  • Reception and lobby feature walls — the classic application, seen once on arrival, never touched.
  • Bar fronts and back-bar panels in hospitality and residential majlis spaces, lit from behind or within a joinery recess.
  • Vanity splashbacks on light contact only — never as a working countertop surface.
  • Not kitchen worktops, high-traffic flooring, or anywhere subject to impact, acidic spills or standing water. Onyx etches and scratches far more readily than marble.

Common onyx colours we stock

Green and teal onyx from Iran carry a deep, fluid banding that reads dramatically when backlit at scale. Honey and amber tones from Pakistan give a warmer glow, popular behind reception desks and bar fronts. We also supply hand-assembled semi-precious stone panels such as blue agate for smaller, more decorative applications, with a longer lead time for sourcing and assembly.

Care and realistic expectations

Onyx is sealed at installation and should never be cleaned with anything acidic or abrasive — a soft cloth and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Because it sees light contact rather than daily wear, a well-specified onyx feature wall needs very little ongoing maintenance beyond occasional dusting and periodic resealing, addressed in the same sealing schedule as the rest of a project’s natural stone.
