Choosing the right family for the job

Every stone is good at something and bad at something else. Here is how we actually advise clients.

Polished marble slab showing natural grey veining

01 — Natural

Marble

Metamorphosed limestone, soft enough to polish to a mirror and soft enough to scratch. Marble is the most beautiful surface in the catalogue and the one that asks most of its owner.

  • Best for: feature walls, vanities, low-traffic floors, staircases, majlis flooring
  • Think twice: busy family kitchens, outdoor use, anywhere lemon and vinegar live
  • Finishes: polished, honed, leathered, brushed
  • Thickness: 18 mm and 20 mm standard; 30 mm for counters and treads

Marble or granite for a kitchen?

02 — Natural

Granite

Igneous, quartz-rich and genuinely hard. Granite resists heat, acid and scratching better than any other natural stone we sell, which is why it has outlasted every trend since the 1990s.

  • Best for: kitchen worktops, exterior cladding, paving, stair treads, commercial floors
  • Think twice: if you want dramatic veining — granite speckles, it rarely flows
  • Finishes: polished, honed, flamed, bush-hammered
  • Thickness: 20 mm interior; 30–40 mm for cladding and paving

03 — Natural

Quartzite

Sandstone recrystallised under heat and pressure. It looks like marble and behaves closer to granite — the upgrade we recommend most often when a client loves Calacatta but cooks every day.

  • Best for: kitchen islands, bar tops, high-traffic floors, backlit panels
  • Think twice: budget — genuine quartzite carries a premium over marble
  • Watch for: soft “quartzite” that is really dolomitic marble; we acid-test before we buy
  • Thickness: 20 mm and 30 mm

04 — Natural

Onyx & semi-precious stone

Translucent, fragile and unforgettable. Onyx is a decorative material, not a working surface — specify it where light can pass through it and hands rarely touch it.

  • Best for: backlit walls, reception desks, bar fronts, headboards, ceiling panels
  • Think twice: worktops, floors, anything wet or load-bearing
  • Always supplied: resin-treated, mesh-backed and often laminated to glass or acrylic
  • Lighting: edge-lit LED panels at 40–60 mm stand-off to avoid hot spots

05 — Natural

Travertine & limestone

Sedimentary, matte and warm. These are the stones that make a Gulf courtyard feel cool without looking cold, and they age into something better rather than something tired.

  • Best for: pool surrounds, terraces, courtyards, soft modern interiors, spa areas
  • Think twice: kitchen worktops — both stones are porous and acid-sensitive
  • Finishes: filled & honed, unfilled, brushed, tumbled
  • Note: unfilled travertine is naturally slip-resistant around water

06 — Engineered

Engineered quartz

Around 90% crushed quartz bound in resin. Non-porous, consistent and easy to live with — the sensible specification when twelve apartments need identical kitchens.

  • Best for: kitchen worktops, bathrooms, multi-unit developments, commercial counters
  • Think twice: outdoors — the resin binder yellows under UV, so never use it in direct sun
  • Heat: use trivets; sustained heat above roughly 150°C can mark the binder
  • Thickness: 20 mm standard, 30 mm for chunky edge profiles

Quartz or sintered stone?

07 — Engineered

Sintered stone

Mineral powders pressed and fired without resin. That single difference is why sintered stone can go outside through a UAE summer and quartz cannot.

  • Best for: outdoor kitchens, sun-facing terraces, full-height shower walls, ventilated facades
  • Think twice: DIY fabrication — it needs specific tooling and an experienced cutter
  • Formats: up to 3200 × 1600 mm in 6, 12 and 20 mm
  • Performance: UV stable, frost proof, non-porous, food-safe without sealing

08 — Engineered

Large-format porcelain

Thin, light and dimensionally perfect. Where dead load, budget or maintenance is the constraint, porcelain does most of what stone does for a fraction of the weight.

  • Best for: high-rise cladding, lift lobbies, corridors, rental units, wet areas
  • Think twice: exposed edges — a cut edge reads as a thin line, so mitre it or trim it
  • Formats: 1200 × 2800 mm and 1600 × 3200 mm in 6 and 9 mm
  • Benefit: roughly one third the weight of 20 mm natural stone
